@foxytaughtyou first shared the word of warning over the weekend, noting that she and her friend had booked an Airbnb in Philadelphia and didn’t notice anything wrong at first. After falling asleep on the couches the first night, they woke up and realized something on the ceiling that was supposed to be a sprinkler system didn’t look right.

In retrospect, the listing was a little shady from the start.

“The air bnb was listed under a business name & we never met the owner,” she wrote. “Everytime we tried calling them, even at our arrival they’ll never answer the phone. They only respond through message so we do not know how they look, sound or if it’s a male or female.”

The frustrated guest says she reported the situation to both Airbnb and the police.

She also shared video from the rental with more details about their experience.

Airbnb has grown in popularity over the years, but has also been faced with a number of criticisms, especially where safety is involved—and this didn’t help.

However, while you absolutely can get hidden cameras disguised as sprinklers, a follow-up from FOX29 reporter Kelly Rule said that Philadelphia police investigated and discovered these were actually just sprinklers after all.

The trepidation the story caused is still valid, and helpful safety suggestions for those still renting from Airbnb continued to circulate.
