Everyone is sick of the debate over whether or not to wear a mask by this point. But mostly, people who listen to science and understand that masks are an absolute necessity for us to get through this pandemic with as few casualties as possible are sick of listening to anti-maskers claim that personal freedom is an acceptable excuse to put others at risk.
But still, we try to reach them, because their refusal to wear masks ultimately effects everyone, from the people responsibly going out with masks on, to the essential worker who has no choice, to the immunocompromised relatives or roommates people come home to at the end of the day.
Twitter user @libbyjones715 tried to explain everything in a way that these anti-maskers might actually understand, by making it all about personal freedoms.
“Welcome to the Freedom Cafe!” she wrote. “We trust you to make your own choices if you want to wear a face mask. And, in the same spirit of individual liberty, we allow our staff to make their own choices about the safety procedures they prefer to follow as they prepare and serve your food.”
Libby went on to detail all the changes in standard restaurant requirements this devotion to freedom above all else would entail.
After determining this was satire (because clearly some Americans ARE this ridiculous), people applauded Libby for the comparison.
And some shared similar ideas for pushing freedom over safety.
One guy tried to claim he’d be thrilled to eat at a place like Freedom Cafe, but everyone quickly shut him down.
The bottom line is that safety standards are in place for a reason. You know, like everyone’s safety. If you benefit from any of those standards in any part of your life — food requirements, building codes, driving laws, etc — then you should absolutely be able to grasp why wearing a mask to protect other people is a necessity right now.
And if you don’t, may you find your way to Freedom Cafe. Good luck with the food poisoning!
