There are a lot of stories about how much money politicians spend on things like their clothes and homes and food that are often genuinely shocking, even if they’re also a bit stupid. Of course Hilary Clinton has a coat worth several thousand dollars. Of course, Bernie Sanders is a millionaire who lives in a mansion in Vermont. These are powerful people who are also old and have accrued a lot of wealth. Sometimes it’s gross, but it’s not surprising.
So I was surprised to read that Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez paid for a shockingly expensive haircut. AOC is very vocal about the need to alleviate tax burdens on the poor and shift them to the one percent. She has fairly socialist views about money and government. The conservative Washington Times claimed to have an exclusive story about her secretly spending oceans of money on her hair at a Washington D.C. salon. Can you believe?! Republicans are scandalized.
She spent…$260. Plus tip.
Okay, I don’t know who wrote this article, but they are not a woman who has ever gotten their hair done somewhere besides SuperCuts. I’d be concerned is AOC was spending less than $200 on her hair and still appearing on camera as much as she does. THIS is a story? Give me a break.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez clearly thinks it’s ridiculous, too:
Won’t you look at that: Mike Pence used *taxpayer funds* - not personal ones - to spend several thousand haircuts’ worth of public money on a visit to Trump golf courses.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 10, 2019
I wonder if Republicans care about corruption as much as they care about a woman’s cut & color. https://t.co/xBze4obZhv
This is one of the most nakedly sexist digs at AOC has received in like, the last two days. She should have one of those signs that reads, “It’s been _ number of hours since someone said something insanely misogynistic about me,” but it would always be set to zero.
At least other people recognize how stupid this is as well:
People need to know how much AOC spends on her hair but nobody asks how much Stephen Miller spent on the sharpie he uses on his. pic.twitter.com/c2H4gpJC9v— The Volatile Mermaid (@OhNoSheTwitnt) October 10, 2019
Look I wasn’t going to get involved in this @AOC hair scandal. I really wasn’t. Bc I’m a defense reporter and, why? But I cannot NOT remark that the story seems distressed that AOC, a “socialist,” got a $300 haircut instead of...a government-subsidized one?https://t.co/D7q9c4tL0p pic.twitter.com/OJ46UrkBOF— Katie Bo Williams (@KatieBoWill) October 10, 2019
“Why won’t AOC get her hair cut like Jeff Sessions?” is certainly a take pic.twitter.com/sybZxjm26P— Josh Billinson (@jbillinson) October 10, 2019
How dare AOC, a young woman with a full head of hair, spend more money on a haircut than Jeff Sessions, a balding old man who still laments the end of slavery? pic.twitter.com/lvx21vXSCS— The Volatile Mermaid (@OhNoSheTwitnt) October 10, 2019
AOC should definitely style her hair like a bald old white man who sounds like what a confederate flag would sound like if a confederate flag could talk.— 🕸Imani Gandy Corn🕸 (@AngryBlackLady) October 10, 2019
white people would lose their minds if they knew how much black women spend on hair tbh— Aminatou Sow (@aminatou) October 10, 2019
I don’t understand why AOC would pay $300 for a haircut when every man criticizing her would cut it for free (as long as they get to keep the hair).— Dan Wilbur (@DanWilbur) October 10, 2019
I feel for AOC as I am also a democratic socialist with beautiful hair— Julia Claire (@ohJuliatweets) October 10, 2019
As a New Yorker who has far less hair than AOC , and who spends about $250 every time I step into a salon in the city, I find it impossible to find a lick of outrage. Also didn’t we spend a lot of time talking about John Edwards expensive haircuts? https://t.co/QrH4vRJBf3— Elizabeth West (@Limeylizzie) October 10, 2019
There’s a story going around about how AOC went all BUCK WILD and spent a fortune getting her hair did.— Haunted Susan Arendt, LLC (@SusanArendt) October 10, 2019
It was $80 for the cut and $180 for lowlights in NYC.
I pay *slightly* less than that in Durham. And I’m not constantly on TV having my every breath scrutinized.
All I saw was "people slamming on AOC's haircut", and comparing it to John Edwards. I then assumed she spend thousands on it.— Anthony Distler (@anthdistler) October 10, 2019
$300? Really? Do people expect a member of Congress to go to Holiday Hair like my broke ass? Of course not! https://t.co/EnzERNQ2kd
Please, AOC, I’m begging you—do not get your hair done the same place as Jeff Sessions goes. He has brain worms and I’m afraid they’re highly contagious.
