Bill Nye Shows How Masks Help Prevent The Spread Of Coronavirus In TikTok Series

Bill Nye the Science Guy is back in his new, slightly less child-friendly form, and he’s discovered TikTok. In a series of two videos, he shows how different materials over the mouth reduce the amount of breath one can blow out into the world, along with all the coronaviruses that medical experts are warning could be “airborne,” meaning they can survive in tiny particles in the air.

As a callback to his classic TV show, Bill presents his candle experiment as a “Consider the Following” segment.

In the first video, Bill shows how a knitted scarf isn’t good for protection against a pandemic by blowing air through the scarf to blow out a candle, which he does easily. He then takes a homemade cloth mask containing just two layers to show how he can move the flame of the candle through it, but can’t blow it out.

“If you’re wearing one of these, you are protecting yourself and those around you,” he explains.

The N95 mask is even better, as the flame doesn’t budge when he blows hard through the material.

In the second video, Bill drops the friendly scientist act and shows a bit of that new Nye.

“The reason we want you to wear a mask is to protect you, sure,” he says. “But the main reason we want you to wear a mask IS TO PROTECT ME, FROM YOU, AND THE PARTICLES FROM YOUR RESPIRATORY SYSTEM FROM GETTING INTO MY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM.”

He punctuates these statements using red filters and distortion sounds, just so you know he’s being extra serious.

“Everybody, this is a matter, literally, of life and death,” he continues. “And when I use the word ‘literally,’ I mean literally, a matter of life and death.”

A good number of people who are today adult persons grew up on Bill Nye the Science Guy and have enjoyed his new, less-patient persona as he’s taken on issues of climate change, vaccines, and other pressing matters that have caused much public debate. Many Twitter users are definitely appreciating this latest video series.
