A Connecticut father was shocked discover footage on his home security camera showing his 10-year-old Black son hiding from police as they drove past the family’s yard — and the boy says he did so “because they killed George Floyd.”
Stacey Pierre-Louis shared the video of his son, Elijah, to Instagram after he saw it earlier this month.
“Debated with myself for a few days before deciding to post this,” he wrote. “I was at work watching my son shoot hoops in the driveway when I caught this. It floored me.”
In the footage, Elijah is dribbling his basketball when he spots a police vehicle coming down the street. He casually moves to stand behind the family’s car so that the cops can’t see him, and just as casually resumes playing as soon as they’re gone.
Stacey asked his son about the incident later.
Stacey noted in his post that he didn’t understand why Elijah would be hiding if he didn’t do anything wrong, and says when he confronted his son about what happened, he said that he his from police “because they killed George Floyd.”
“A manager at my job told me to tell him that doing what he did is ridiculous and that I should teach him not to be fearful of police,” he wrote. “Deep down, I don’t know if it’s true, maybe staying out of the way is best.”
However, Stacey says that they’ve never taught Elijah to be afraid of police, and the family goes out of their way to keep him from seeing the news. They also live in an “affluent neighborhood…[and] this kid has all the opportunity to do/be whatever he wants unlike many kids who look like him because resources aren’t made available.”
The video soon spread across social media as an example of the kind of fear Black and brown kids have to grow up with living in America.
And many related to Elijah’s decision to hide.
“Growing up black or brown most of the time means fearing the police vs looking up to them,” Stacey wrote in his Instagram post, before admitting that he still didn’t know what to tell his son over the incident. “No need to reply in the comments, but think to yourself…what would you say?”
