The president of a conservative Catholic organization called Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene a “disgrace” in response to her claim that Satan now controls the Catholic church. Her evidence for this was to point at some Catholics who actually follow the teachings of Jesus and the Bible by saying we should welcome immigrants and treat them kindly instead of turning them away or throwing their children in cages.
The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights took exception to this, pointing out that there are plenty of things about the Catholic church to criticize, but instead she just attacked the whole thing with a cartoonishly absurd accusation.
“She had plenty of opportunities to make rational criticisms of the agency, but instead she slandered the entire Catholic Church,” wrote president Bill Donohue.
“Satan is controlling the Catholic Church? She needs to apologize to Catholics immediately. She is a disgrace.”
Greene made these comments during an interview with Michael Voris of the far-right Catholic “news” outlet Church Militant, claiming that the non-profit organization Catholic Charities is not following the Bible by helping those in need without judgment.
“What it is, is Satan’s controlling the church,” she said. “The church is not doing its job. And it’s not adhering to the teachings of Christ. And it’s not adhering to what the word of God says we’re supposed to do and how we’re supposed to live.”
You might have initially hoped that she was saying this because of the ongoing sexual abuse horror show within the church, or the story that more recently grabbed the world’s attention over the mass child graves found near those Canadian indigenous torture schools. But you would be wrong.
“And what they’re doing by saying ‘Oh, we have to love these people and take care of these migrants and love another, this is loving one another,’ yes, we are supposed to love one another, but their definition of what love one another means, means destroying our laws,” Greene continued.
It doesn’t mean that, and also helping migrants by giving them legal and financial support is in no way against U.S. law. Regardless, both the Bible and the Catholic church predate the U.S. by many, many centuries and morality doesn’t change with the passing of some country’s awful, dehumanizing, and deadly immigration laws.
Donohue closed his statement by saying that he will be telling House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on Greene. Of course, Donohue is a conservative Catholic with a long history of being a horrible bigot, demanding an apology from “gays” in 2016, claiming that they had “assaulted” him by existing.
“I don’t want to have a lifestyle thrusted in my face,” he said.
Greene responded Wednesday to Donohue’s statement with her own saying that she’s the one who is owed an apology, otherwise known as the “no, YOU” gambit.
“Today, the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue accused me of slandering Catholics and Catholicism in an interview I gave to Michael Voris at Church Militant,” she tweeted. “Nothing could be further from the truth, and he must apologize promptly and publicly for these words.”
She went on to say that she was born into and married by the Catholic church, and finally brings up the church’s rampant sexual abuse problem, claiming that this was what caused her to stop attending mass. She then falsely claimed to have said that it was the bishops of the church, not the church itself, that are controlled by Satan, directly contradicting her own words.
Those who are not fans of either Greene or Donohue are now enjoying the fight between the two of them, praying that it gets uglier.
