On Thursday, Alexandrai Ocasio-Cortez held a town meeting in Corona, Queens, at a public library. That’s part of her job, but AOC has a very high profile online amongst both conservatives and liberals, and any public appearance attracts a lot of attention. In this case, it attracted a constituent who closed out the meeting by screaming, “Eat the babies!”
Hard message to follow.
Newsweek reports that the constituent was speaking to climate change, when she said, “We’re not going to be here for much longer because of the climate crisis! We only have a few months left! I love that you support the Green Deal but getting rid of fossil fuel is not going to solve the problem fast enough. I think your next campaign slogan has to be this, we got to start eating babies.”
One of Ocasio-Cortez's constituents loses her mind over climate change during AOC's townhall, claims we only have a few months left: "We got to start eating babies! We don't have enough time! ... We have to get rid of the babies! ... We need to eat the babies!" pic.twitter.com/uVmOnboluI— Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra) October 3, 2019
She then revealed she was wearing a homemade t-shirt that read, “Save the Planet, Eat the Children.” How long do you think it will be before we see those on Etsy?
AOC, a generous queen, went on Twitter to say that the woman who suggested cannibalism as a solution to climate destruction should be left alone, as she could be struggling with mental health issues.
This person may have been suffering from a mental condition and it’s not okay that the right-wing is mocking her and potentially make her condition or crisis worse. Be a decent human being and knock it off.— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) October 4, 2019
The Trumps are loving that a supposed supporter of a famous Democratic representative is acting wilder than a Trump supporter for once, and are circulating the clip for their own constituency to mock:
Seems like a normal AOC supporter to me. https://t.co/NWVMRD0wsl— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) October 4, 2019
AOC is a Wack Job! https://t.co/LU3hIeek0c— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 4, 2019
Yes, the president called a member of Congress a “wack job.”
The whole situation is pretty confusing, especially because the woman has been identified by some supporters as a member of the “LaRouchies,” a very peculiar political organization that has been all over the map—but they love pulling stunts. They are also Trump supporters at this point, according to this thread created by writer Matthew Sweet:
The LaRouchies are pretty exotic. They believe that the Queen controls the drugs trade. They think Prince Philip wants to start WW3. They think Bertrand Russell used the Beatles as part of a secret British psy war against the USA. They are, to use a technical term, nuts. pic.twitter.com/HaeOQC0WMe— Matthew Sweet (@DrMatthewSweet) October 4, 2019
The LaRouche group was once a fairly ordinary revolutionary Marxist group. In the early days Bernie Sanders subscribed to their literature. Then came the great Brainwashing Affair of 1974, when members were convinced they had been programmed to kill by the CIA.— Matthew Sweet (@DrMatthewSweet) October 4, 2019
But the point here is that a small, weird, politically unclassifiable - once Marxist, now more often described as neo-fascist and antisemitic - has spent nearly five decades pulling these stunts. Democrat Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis was a notable victim. pic.twitter.com/40ILdTAc8v— Matthew Sweet (@DrMatthewSweet) October 4, 2019
And here they are, making headlines again. And still crazy after all these years. pic.twitter.com/wXKYCHcHN9— Matthew Sweet (@DrMatthewSweet) October 4, 2019
But even AOC supporters aren’t looking very deep into this woman’s history, assuming she pulled this stunt for personal attention rather than as part of a larger political movement. We have a tendency to look at politics as a binary, but some groups hold very weird opposing views. This woman is one of them.
Nuance doesn’t make for as many good “eat the babies” jokes on Twitter:
Wondering what’s going through the person’s head who had to print a T Shirt with “Eat the Babies” on it. On one hand it sounds metal AF. On the other the font was in all rainbow lettering.— Stephen Miller (@redsteeze) October 4, 2019
I don’t know who needs to hear this right now, but do not, I repeat, do not eat the babies.— Carol Roth (@caroljsroth) October 4, 2019
Now listen. I usually try not to get political, and I really don’t want to cause controversy. But I just feel like I need to state my opinion here.— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) October 4, 2019
I don’t think we should eat the babies.
Whatever this lady’s true motivations are, I think we can all recognize a troll when we see one, whatever our political affiliation.
