Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, has died at the age of 99.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.
Philip was married to Queen Elizabeth for 74 years, and his health had been declining in recent years. His death came as no shock to the public or, reportedly, to his family.
While it’s always tragic for people to lose a loved one, Philip was also a public figure, and his long history of offensive comments, combined with the recent increased scrutiny the Royal Family has been under following That Interview and the fact that he lived a long and prosperous life, has left people feeling more comfortable joking about his passing than they might otherwise have been.
So if you’re the kind of person who deals with uncomfortable situations with humor, or if you’re simply not at all sad that Philip’s time has come, read on and rest assured that you are not alone. If neither of these things apply to you…now is probably a good time to turn back.
