After being seen at the Scottsdale Fashion Square on Saturday night during while looting was occurring, YouTube personality Jake Paul has been charged with criminal trespass and unlawful assembly.
Paul, who is worth an estimated $11.5 million, responded on Twitter by saying, “Gimme my charges and let’s put the focus back on George Floyd and Black Lives Matter.”
Paul posted videos to his Instagram saying he had been tear-gassed by police at Fashion Square on Saturday night. He also posted videos showing himself and his friends setting off fireworks at the mall’s entrance.
“I do not condone violence, looting, or breaking the law; however I understand the anger and frustration that led to the destruction we witnessed,” Paul also wrote on Twitter. “While it’s not the answer, it’s important that people see it and collectively figure out how to move forward in a healthy way.”
Most folks did not take Paul’s participation in the George Floyd protests seriously, accusing the YouTuber of looking for clout and attention as well as being the poster boy for white privilege.
According to the police report, Paul trespassed in the closed business location of Scottsdale Fashion Square while looting was occurring. The report also said that Paul refused to disperse from the mall after being given the order to by a police helicopter.
Paul was also mocked on Reddit with memes (note: these do not actually depict the arrest).
A petition calling for Paul’s arrest had almost 30,000 signatures as of Thursday morning. The Scottsdale City Court issued a summons for Paul to appear in court on June 8.
