A heartwarming letter left to a high school librarian by a student is producing tears all over Twitter after being shared by Amy Milstead, a librarian at the Texas school, on Thursday. The letter features a number of quotes singing the highest praises for librarians, researched and put together by the student Reginae as a gift that left Milstead “speechless.”

“I’m of a fearsome mind to throw my arms around every librarian who crosses my path, on behalf of the souls they never knew they saved,” Reginae wrote, quoting American novelist Barbara Kingsolver. “Truly amazing school librarian is hard to find difficult to part with and impossible to forget.”

The last line appears to be a Reginae original.

“When you enter this library you are a scientist, you are an explorer, you are a reader, you are important, you are loved, you are respected, you are the reason we are here.”

Libraries have occasionally come under attack by people who think privatizing everything is a good idea, even as they became even more essential resources during the pandemic. Many libraries offered free masks and other protective equipment to anyone who visited and often doubled as testing centers as medical centers struggled to handle the massive influx of people who needed them.

Now going viral on Twitter, the letter has touched more than just Milstead and her friends, but is warming hearts around the world. The beautiful message has inspired many people to share their own stories about how libraries, and particularly the librarians who make them wonderful safe places of refuge, changed their lives in big and small ways. Some credit librarians for saving their lives after facing difficulties in school.
