You see a lot of messed up stuff on the internet, especially during times of global crisis like these, but this video of a Virginia senator making a nasty tuna melt is proving to be too much for an overloaded American public.
Democratic Senator Mark Warner posted the video on his Instagram page in which he uses too much mayonnaise, gross cheese, and a microwave to create the world’s worst sandwich.
“My daughters won’t eat them anymore, and my staff tried to stop me from sharing this quarantine delicacy with the world,” he wrote. “Fortunately for you, they were OVERRULED. So here it is, my soon-to-be-world-famous Tuna Melt.”
Oh, it’s famous, alright. But not for the reason you may have hoped.
There are so many things wrong with the way he makes this sandwich: the bread, failing to drain the brine from the tuna can, having the nerve to microwave fish in a house he shares with other human beings.
Even fellow Virginia Senator Tim Kaine couldn’t resist dragging Warner for this one.
I’ve learned a lot of things from my senior senator, but I’m proud to say cooking isn’t one of them. https://t.co/lWP7BzD0b0— Tim Kaine (@timkaine) April 22, 2020
To his credit, Senator Warner is clearly poking fun of himself in the video, exaggerating the skill it takes to make the tuna melt and using text graphics to admit this is the only recipe he knows. Plus, he uses the microwave time to wash his hands thoroughly.
In the end, he does issue a pretty nice statement encouraging Virginians to keep up the social distancing and assuring them that they will make it to the other side.
“We will get through this Virginia,” he said. “We will get through this America. When we go back to basics.”
Maybe a little less basic when it comes to sandwiches, though.
Another positive thing about this otherwise cringe-worthy video is its service as a distraction from the admittedly worse things going on right now.
I… I made a tuna melt for breakfast this morning (I'm on furlough, don't judge me) and Mark Warner just… tweeted it out https://t.co/vFEnF4hW7U— Jessie Opoien (@jessieopie) April 22, 2020
I grew up a poor white raised on tuna salad sandwiches and I have never seen anything that white in my life.— Nicole H (@n_lea) April 22, 2020
Not draining the tuna is also disturbing. That's got to be one wet sandwich.— Catsmeat Potter-Pirbright (@PotterCatsmeat) April 22, 2020
I genuinely 100% thought this was vintage film from the late 80s.— Tilted Slippers (@tilted_slippers) April 22, 2020
I was already at a level gross …but When he microwaved it.. I was like pic.twitter.com/ZawKdl8wzY

I literally just laughed for five minutes straight. I have been struggling with Covid19 for four weeks, and this is the best I’ve felt in a month. Thank you!— Alex Mindt (@alexmindt) April 22, 2020
Thank you, Mr. Senator, for sacrificing yourself so we could all have some laughs at your expense. We needed this.
