Two parents decided to bring the next best thing with them on a family road trip after their kids declined to join them because they thought it would be “too boring.” Cassie and Chris Langan brought along the internet modem—the device that converts data so it can be sent from one computer to another—and photographed it having all the fun that their kids missed out on.

“We asked our kids if they would like to go on a day trip to Warrnambool today and were met with the response ‘that’s so boring, I don’t want to go’,” Cassie wrote. “Chris and I decided that instead of taking 3 unappreciative kids out, we let the ones who didn’t want to go stay home and took our most overworked family member for a well deserved day out…our modem.”
Warrnambool is a lovely city along the Great Ocean Road, in Victoria, Australia, with beautiful beaches and museums all about its seafaring history. Not all of that sounds like a fun time for kids, especially as they get older, but it might be more fun than a day at home without the internet.
“Modem had a fantastic day not being used by the kids and it was lovely not to listen to constant bickering. The only complaining was Evan being mortified that we took our modem out in public.”
Evan must be really upset now that the Langans’ post has gone viral, with over 70,000 shares since Sunday. The photos include multiple shots of the modem on the beach, one enjoying a museum, a couple enjoying the local cuisine, and one at some kind of creepy carnival with modem’s friend the little green shark. The modem even got to enjoy a Tooheys beer.
Their kids weren’t too happy, but the internet has fallen in love with this story. It’s certainly one of the most positive to come out of Australia this week, and the reactions on Facebook have been overwhelmingly supportive.
“Wow Cassie what a great idea,” wrote one commenter. “I wish more parents would do this.”
“Bloody love it!!” said another. “Modem should be taken out more often by most parents.”
A couple of people were a little concerned, however. But only for the modem.
“Well hope modem didn’t get sand in any of the uncomfortable places,” one comment reads.
