An online petition to rename Fifth Avenue, the New York street that houses the city’s Trump Tower, after former President Barack Obama is blowing up, receiving tens of thousands of signatures in the space of a single day.
Genius trolling. Sign the petition. https://t.co/l2A3wHRn7O— Andrew (@GrayAndrew) August 12, 2019
Yesterday, it was reported that the petition had over 70,000 followers. Today, it has over 130,000.
“The City of Los Angeles recently honored former President Barack Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown L.A. in his honor,” the petition reads.
“We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers.”
The entirety of Fifth avenue would not be renamed should the idea behind this petition be approved by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a known harsh critic of Donald Trump.
The petition would only rename the section between 56th and 57th Streets, which just happens to be where Trump Tower is.
Trump Fact:— Donaldo (@donaldmackenz30) August 10, 2019
New Yorkers don't like Trump.
They have started a petition to request that the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 59th be renamed President Barack H. Obama Avenue.
If it gets the green light, Trump Tower will have a new address.
Poetic justice or what...?
“I honestly started it as a joke,” she said. “I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it was named after former President Obama and thought why not.”
Now that the petition has gone viral, she’s taking it much more seriously. Rowin has already contacted the New York City Council about the idea and some of the council members have expressed interest.
The effort would have to get around a local rule that says someone has to be dead for two years before they can have a street named after them, but rules can be changed.
