Today is a big day for Trekkies/Trekkers, sci-fi lovers, and general nerds across the world. It’s the premiere of Star Trek: Picard, the long-awaited continuation of The Next Generation storyline.
The show is set two decades after the end of the last The Next Generation movie. The trailer shows some heavy-hitting characters, including Deanna Troi, Will Riker, and Seven of Nine. Picard follows the life of retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard, years after his time on the Enterprise (and after one seriously horrible loss—everyone’s favorite android, Data, who, somehow, appears in the show).
Because of course it is, Star Trek: Picard was already approved for a Season 2—and guess who will be making an appearance? The wise, loveable hundreds-year-old Guinan, played by none other than Whoopi Goldberg.
Her response, unsurprisingly, was emotional. Guinan was an important character for Enterprise. Her wisdom, clarity, and compassion made the ship—and Ten-Forward—a better place.
In fact, Patrick Stewart offered Whoopi the role on national television, during his guest spot on The View:
See Whoopi Goldberg's emotional reaction when Patrick Stewart officially invites her to return to #StarTrek for season two of #StarTrekPicard: “It was wonderful having you, and we cannot wait to have you with us again one more time.” https://t.co/f8u2wbJuik pic.twitter.com/ZLI0cEtwWP— The View (@TheView) January 22, 2020
Trekkies everywhere flipped out after watching the video:

Love you Whoopi! So super glad and excited you’ll be returning to your character of Guinan! She’s one of the best characters in all of #StarTrek and was the mouthpiece for the heart and soul of STTNG. pic.twitter.com/RBoG9ZKtUs

I saw Patrick speak at a Star Trek con in ’91, and he just glowed when someone asked him about working with Whoopi. The love is real!

Me too, I’m honestly tearing up at how sincere and genuine his request was and how touched she was and the real friendship there.

I had never seen whoopi so happy inside, It made me tear up in joy for her. <3

It wasn’t all happy tears, though. A lot of people—rightfully—took issue with Joy Behar’s touching Whoopi’s hair and making comments about it. As if it were relevant:
I was loving this riiiiiiiiight up until this moment. “The hair thing” 🙄 pic.twitter.com/otARyoRsjE

So as a huge Trek fan, so happy to have Whoopi back.
As a human being, Joy should be ashamed of herself.
1. Asking that Whoopi gets rid of her hair.
2. Touching her hair!!!!
What business is it of hers? How would she like it if someone touched her hair? So disrespectful.

Seriously. WTF. People were not happy about it. Not only did it denigrate the moment, but it’s also not okay to simply touch someone’s hair like that.
They need to enrol Joy in a cultural sensitivity program cos this ain’t it. Touching a Black woman’s hair & on live TV? Is she drunk? Also, how is it her business how Whoopie wears her hair? Does Joy hear us complaining about her own bedraggled head of coppery ropey hair? Well?

I agree!!! I thought that was so unnecessary! I felt like she was trying to take her moment away….I love Whoopi’s hair!!! And I love the response Sir Patrick said to Joy!!…I love her as Guinan!! Can’t wait!!
— goldstarwidow08 (@goldstarwidow08) January 23, 2020
And, as usual, people found the time to make fun of Meghan McCain:
I love Sir Patrick
I love star trek
I love Whoopi
But the best thing about this clip is the cutting of Megan McCain from the frame the whole time
Blessings to all

In the end, the world can’t wait to watch Picard — and to burn through season one so we can finally see Whoopi reprise her role as Guinan next season:
Guinan was MVP of so many excellent episodes, yesterday’s enterprise, best of both worlds giving the pep talk to Riker and even generations on the big screen, awesome to know shes coming back!
