Patrick Stewart Surprised Whoopi Goldberg On “The View” By Asking Her To Reprise Her “Star Trek” Role For “Picard”

Today is a big day for Trekkies/Trekkers, sci-fi lovers, and general nerds across the world. It’s the premiere of Star Trek: Picard, the long-awaited continuation of The Next Generation storyline.

The show is set two decades after the end of the last The Next Generation movie. The trailer shows some heavy-hitting characters, including Deanna Troi, Will Riker, and Seven of Nine. Picard follows the life of retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard, years after his time on the Enterprise (and after one seriously horrible loss—everyone’s favorite android, Data, who, somehow, appears in the show).

Because of course it is, Star Trek: Picard was already approved for a Season 2—and guess who will be making an appearance? The wise, loveable hundreds-year-old Guinan, played by none other than Whoopi Goldberg.

Her response, unsurprisingly, was emotional. Guinan was an important character for Enterprise. Her wisdom, clarity, and compassion made the ship—and Ten-Forward—a better place.

In fact, Patrick Stewart offered Whoopi the role on national television, during his guest spot on The View:

Trekkies everywhere flipped out after watching the video:

It wasn’t all happy tears, though. A lot of people—rightfully—took issue with Joy Behar’s touching Whoopi’s hair and making comments about it. As if it were relevant:

Seriously. WTF. People were not happy about it. Not only did it denigrate the moment, but it’s also not okay to simply touch someone’s hair like that.

And, as usual, people found the time to make fun of Meghan McCain:

In the end, the world can’t wait to watch Picard — and to burn through season one so we can finally see Whoopi reprise her role as Guinan next season:
