The West Coast is on fire.
This happens every summer, particularly in California, but never has it been anywhere near this bad. California, Oregon, and Washington are all facing raging wildfires that are turning the air orange and raining down ash for miles and miles outside of the effected areas.
In addition to making it difficult to breathe, the fiery atmosphere is also creating a truly astonishing landscape that makes it look as if we’re living in the middle of an apocalyptic nightmare. This is the color palette for far too many movies about the end of the world, or life after the end of the world as we know it, only this is both our temporary reality and a look at how the world could shift forever in the future thanks to a persistent failure to address climate change.
If you don’t live on the West Coast, the photos truly can’t do the experience justice, but here are some of the most horrifying ones all the same. And yes, this is really what it looks like, no filters.
