On New Year’s Eve, Pope Francis was recorded slapping a pilgrim’s hand away as she clung to him like a teen girl meeting Harry Styles on the red carpet. She pretty much yanks at him, so its kind of understandable that he has a big reaction. But he’s also the Pope, and if anyone on earth is supposed to be setting an example for how to deal with difficult people, it’s God’s right-hand man.
To be fair, Pope Francis did apologize, seemingly very ashamed for having laid hands on a woman, even if it was just a smack on the wrist. He apologized on New Year’s Day at the Vatican.
At Angelus this morning, Pope Francis visibility chokes up, as he apologises for his “bad example yesterday”, when in his words he lost “patience” when a pilgrim grabbed his hand and wouldn’t let go, and he slapped her hand in order to free himself. pic.twitter.com/4k6RfQj5ZI— Catholic Sat (@CatholicSat) January 1, 2020
Many have defended his actions, and also pointed out that he has always been weird about touching. He meets millions of people every year and they are always trying to kiss his ring. They haven’t gotten the memo that he dislikes it:
Whatever side of Pope-gate you are on, there’s a meme out there for you. While the Vatican probably hopes to sweep this whole incident under the carpet (their specialty), the Internet has not forgotten.
Pope slap memes have inundated Twitter, giving us all something to laugh about as the holiest has turned to violence. Scroll through and pick out what meme to text to your religious grandma. If she’s been Catholic all these years, she probably has a sense of humor.

Papalogist here. Grabbing Francis by the hand may seem like harmless fun but please remember that if you touch a pope his mother will reject him and abandon the nest.— Jeremy McLellan (@JeremyMcLellan) January 1, 2020
