25 Positive Changes Happening Thanks To The National Black Lives Matter Protests

National protests that were set off by the murder of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin have continued into their third week, remaining non-violent in some areas and suffering police violence in others. Many of the videos coming out of cities in every state in the U.S. have shown additional police brutality and other forms of violence, but as the days have gone on, more and more protest groups have gained important victories and enacted positive change in their communities.

In just over two weeks, the idea of abolishing and/or defunding the institution of police in the country has gained mainstream recognition as people seem to reach the end of their ability to tolerate over 1,000 police killings and countless other brutality incidents every year. Now, communities are beginning to imagine what a society without police would look like and how we can get there. Already, these changes are starting to manifest, with some even reaching outside of the U.S.

Last week, one average Twitter user who goes by “emma” started a thread of examples of positive changes that have come out of the protests, and hundreds of people have replied with hundreds of thousands liking and sharing the tweet. The work is, of course, far from over, but it’s important to celebrate all victories, big and small.

These are some of our favorite examples, although they’re all amazing:
