Senior pastor and far-right conspiracy theorist Rick Wiles is at it again, predictably calling the latest virus the world is freaking out about a “genuine plague” and a “death angel” that God is using to “purge a lot of sin off this planet.” This comes after explanations by experts who say that the coronavirus has not proven to be as deadly as the flu, which kills thousands of people in the U.S. alone every year.
Although any new respiratory virus is dangerous, particularly to the very young, very old, and those with compromised immune systems, because we don’t yet know exactly how it will behave, calling this illness a “plague” may be overdoing it a little. But what else is new for Rick Wiles?
Rick Wiles says the coronavirus is a plague sent by God to purge the world of sin as the End Times approach and those who mock God "better wise up because there is a Death Angel on the loose right now and you are going to get an attitude adjustment." https://t.co/UW8ObaHZoG pic.twitter.com/qp0FomKKUw— Right Wing Watch (@RightWingWatch) January 28, 2020
The virus has appeared, of course, because of “spiritual rebellion,” transgender children, and people making fun of God, according to Rick Wiles. Uh oh.
“Look at the spiritual rebellion that is in this country, the hatred of God, the hatred of the Bible, the hatred of righteousness,” he says. “Just vile, disgusting people in this country now, transgendering little children, perverting them. Look at the rapes, and the sexual immorality, and the filth on our TVs and our movies.”
Does Wiles think that God sent the coronavirus because there was too much sex in Game of Thrones?
“If you are living right for God, if the blood of Jesus Christ is on you, you have no reason to fear this Death Angel,” Wiles continues. “But those of you who are opposing the church of God, mocking God, attacking his servants, you’d better wise up because there is a Death Angel on the loose right now, and you are going to get an attitude adjustment.”
Don’t worry—unless you have a vulnerable immune system, you’ll probably only need to make a temporary adjustment to your daily activity and fluid intake if you catch the new virus. Meanwhile, a lot of people think it’s Wiles who needs the attitude adjustment.
The best evidence that God wants to punish the world is that he created fundamentalist Christians. https://t.co/lW2vfIhMoq— Pitt Griffin (@pittgriffin) January 29, 2020

Rick Wiles uses his platform to make hateful, anti-LGBTQ+ statements and works for a news organization with a history of racist and antisemitic rhetoric. He shouldn't have access to the #WhiteHouse press briefing room.https://t.co/BUa8QvmdKh— Hatewatch (@Hatewatch) January 31, 2020
Welp. I was going to make a joke about evangelicals taking divine credit for the coronavirus but it seems the actual, real-world evangelicals beat me to it.https://t.co/unOE1fmkrs— Molly Hodgdon (@Manglewood) January 30, 2020
If there’s a plague upon humanity, its name is Rick Wiles.
