Another book containing unflattering details about a member of the Trump family came out this week, but this time from the still-Trump-supporting Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former press secretary, and about the president himself. The book, obtained by The Guardian, claims that the president once told Sanders that she should go to North Korea and “take one for the team” after Kim Jong-un seemed to wink at her.
“Kim Jong-un hit on you!” Trump “joked,” according to the memoir. “He did! He f***ing hit on you!”
The book, titled Speaking for Myself: Faith, Freedom, and the Fight of Our Lives Inside the Trump White House, won’t be released to the wider public until next Tuesday. The text largely praises Trump, according to Guardian reporters, but Sanders clearly admits that the president’s response to the wink made her uncomfortable.
“Sir, please stop,” she said in response to Trump claiming Kim Jong-un hit on her..
“Well, Sarah, that settles it,” said Trump. “You’re going to North Korea and taking one for the team! Your husband and kids will miss you, but you’ll be a hero to your country!”
She then says that Trump and former Chief of Staff John Kelly “howled with laughter” at this “joke,” which easily fits into the legal definition of sexual harassment.
In spite of the largely friendly tone of the book, this detail has prompted a new wave of criticism against Trump, accusing him of trying to “pimp out” Sanders for the sake of international relations. At least 25 women have accused Trump of some form of sexual misconduct, from harassment to rape, since the 1970s.
As the 2020 election approaches, Trump seems to be struggling to maintain the same support among women he enjoyed in 2016. In spite of all this, many are still finding the news about Trump’s comments to Sanders shocking.
