On Wednesday, a man named Don Grundmann made a name for himself as one of the stupidest new white supremacists on the scene. There’s a lot of stiff competition in that category, so Grundmann really had to step it up.
His group, which was only birthed four months ago, is called the National Straight Pride Coalition and he has been trying to get permits for a Straight Pride march on August 24, according to the Courier of Montgomery County. During a Modesto City Council meeting, Grundmann accidentally said the quiet part loud and admitted his group was “racist.”
In the clip below, Grundmann says, “We haven’t done anything. We’re a totally peaceful, racist group.”
The crowd erupts and several council members start laughing so hard hey have to turn away. While there’s rarely anything truly funny about the rise of white nationalism, it’s probably a relief to giggle at how absurdly moronic these people are—and how bad at public speaking! Just like Trump.
Grundmann obviously loses control of the moment, and walks away from the podium in a huff.
If you’re wondering if he is correct, and is indeed the leader of a racist group, the National Straight Pride Coalition’s website says their aim is to promote “Western Civilization,” “Caucasians,” “heterosexuality,” and a “God ordained natural nuclear family,” and they love nationalism. Sounds pretty racist to me! And homophobic!
This isn’t even Grundmann’s first rodeo. He apparently has a history of starting groups so he can spout off about how other people live, including one organization called Citizens Against Perversion. In June he protested Drag Queen Story Time at a local library, along with three other people. There were 140 people there to enjoy the story time.
There are a lot of people standing against Grundmann’s antics, including a man named Matthew Mason. Mason is the adopted son of Mylinda Mason, Grundmann’s partner in organizing hate parades. Matthew Mason is gay, and was able to say from personal experience that both Grundmann and his mother are coming from a hateful place. He testified much more eloquently at the meeting himself.
“I have personally heard her use hateful, harmful rhetoric when describing the LGBTQ+ community and non-Christian religious communities,” he said. “Don Grundmann is a radical right-wing fascist from the Bay Area who is attempting to use Modesto as a launching ground for his political and cultural campaign of hate.”
Unfortunately, someone making an ass of themselves on camera doesn’t seem to be enough to end their rise to power these days. But maybe getting mocked everywhere online for weeks will delay the straight pride parade plans. Nothing to feel very proud about in that clip.
