Taylor Swift appeared to have multiple moments of confusion at the 2023 Grammys on Sunday when she was the subject of jokes by host Trevor Noah about current event issues that affect people in a whole different universe than her income level.
Sitting in her glittering dress and expensive jewelry, she shrugged and made a confused face when Noah made a crack about the rising cost of everyday eggs.
She was all on board at first, when the former Daily Show host began by praising her and her fans over the Ticketmaster debacle.
“I’ve got to tell you, Taylor, you have the best fans in the world,” said Noah. “I mean, what they did with Ticketmaster, what they might do for artists all over the world, what they might do for fans who want to go to concerts is amazing.”
“I’m just wondering once they’re done with this, can you get them to handle the price of eggs?” he asked.
Swift jumped immediately to flatter her fans by saying that they can do anything they put their minds to, but shook her head, shrugged, and made a gesture like she had no idea what the comedian was talking about when he brought up the eggs again.
“Swifties: price of eggs, down!” Noah declared. “You go after those chickens.”
The average price of a dozen regular eggs recently skyrocketed in many parts of the U.S., more than doubling from an average of $3 to an average of $7. Big egg companies have blamed a recent outbreak of avian flu among commercial chicken flocks, although reports that this outbreak had little to no impact on the actual production of eggs have some accusing these corporations of price gouging under false pretenses.
Of course, Swift has no reason to be aware of any of this. Her reaction to Noah’s joke soon had people trotting out that old meme from Arrested Development.
That wasn’t the only working-class joke that seemed to go over Swift’s head. People also felt that her reaction to Noah’s crack about Southwest Airlines, referencing the nightmare people endured trying to get flights over the holidays as technical issues combined with horrifying weather resulted in over 16,000 flight cancellations.
“Taylor Swift sold more albums than any other human on the planet this year,” said Noah. “That’s right. More than anybody. The only music we listen to more than Taylor’s music was the hold music for Southwest Airlines.”
Swift responded to this one with a rather blank expression before laughing after everybody else did.
Again, no reason to expect that Swift was at all personally bothered by the utter nightmare so many thousands of normal people endured over the 2022 holiday weekend. In fact, the singer has taken fire recently for being one of the most prolific users of private jets.
We all expect stars like Swift to be somewhat out of touch, but maybe she should think about checking in on the regular people news every now and again. It’s starting to become dire.
