If you grow up poor, you notice a lot of things that kids your own age have that you don’t. But it might not be until later that you realize the full disparity. You might know you’re different, but you’ll probably be an adult before you understand that there are some things in your life that you consider normal that absolutely weren’t the average experience for other people.
Twitter user Trevor Donovan kicked those memories up for a whole lot of former poor kids when he posted about how his family ate as a kid.
“Tell me you grew up poor, without telling me you grew up poor. I’ll go first. We used plain bread as hot dog buns and for dessert… margarine & cinnamon on bread,” he wrote.
People rushed to comment and commiserate in the replies, recognizing each other’s poor kid codes. It’s interesting what some take for granted that would have meant something to a kid growing up without any money, like hot dog buns. Read through and either feel a spark of the familiar or an appreciation for what you have.
