An unnamed White House official told the Washington Post that Donald Trump was indeed the one who altered the weather map with Sharpie to make it look like Hurricane Dorian would hit Alabama, as he has refused to stop claiming no matter how many meteorologists say otherwise.
“No one else writes like that on a map with a black Sharpie,” said the official.
No, no they don’t.
Donald Trump has been insisting all week long that Hurricane Dorian would or could hit Alabama, likely originally going off of some outdated information. After initially being corrected by weather experts, however, Trump proved himself unable to admit being wrong about anything, no matter how minor or how much trouble could be caused by repeating the falsehood.
Nine tweets. Five maps. A sharpie-doctored Oval Office display. A national security council statement. Lots of presidential griping. As Dorian crashes into SC, POTUS is focused on defending his inaccurate claim about a threat to Alabama. W/@ToluseO: https://t.co/3MWoO3mMSr— Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) September 6, 2019
On Wednesday, Trump took it to a new level by not only using outdated maps that showed Dorian brushing up against Alabama, but people noticed that the map had been altered with what looked like black marker to extend the path of the storm into the state. It was originally unclear whether Trump himself had done this or if it was an aide trying to protect the President’s shockingly fragile ego, but now we know.
Still, even after all of this, Trump is not able to let it go. He even has the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration disavowing the Birmingham National Weather Service’s tweets confirming that Dorian won’t hit Alabama. To top things off, he himself tweeted out an edited video today that shows a CNN weather reporter suggesting Hurricane Dorian could hit Alabama, with the video repeatedly backing up so the reporter says “Alabama” over and over.
At this point, the entire “controversy” or whatever is becoming less about whether a hurricane will hit a specific location and more about whether Donald Trump will ever be able to drop the issue and get back to work at his job as the President of the United States of America.
In related news, reports of Trump’s deteriorating “mental state” are increasing, even reaching outlets like Business Insider.
After being called out for doctoring a map with a Sharpie and lying about it, you’re now lying about what you said and when you said it.— George Conway (@gtconway3d) September 6, 2019
If you were mentally balanced, you would have just immediately corrected yourself and moved on.
But you aren’t, and you can’t. https://t.co/CyPZljKuQO
“No one knows what to expect from him anymore,” a former White House official told Insider. “His mood changes from one minute to the next based on some headline or tweet, and the next thing you know his entire schedule gets tossed out the window because he’s losing his s—.”
“He’s deteriorating in plain sight,” said a Republican strategist who is “in frequent contact with the White House.” Another anonymous source said that working for Trump is like “you’re basically stuck looking after a 4-year-old.”
