‘Too Bad!’: Trump Mocks Rep. Elijah Cummings After His Baltimore Home Is Burglarized

First, Trump called Rep. Elijah Cummings’ city of Baltimore “infested” — and now, he’s apparently mocking Cummings for being burglarized.

“Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!” Trump tweeted on Friday morning.

Honestly, coming from anyone else, it might seem like a genuine expression of sympathy. But who are we kidding? This is Trump.

On Thursday, the Baltimore Police Department said they are investigating a report of a burglary that allegedly occurred at Cummings’ house on Saturday in the early morning. Cummings recently confirmed that his house was indeed targeted by an intruder:

“I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house,” Cummings said.

“I thank the Baltimore Police Department for their response and ask that all further inquiries be directed to them.”

On Saturday, before the burglary attempt was made public, Trump attached Cummings’ hometown of Baltimore as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess,” also saying that “no human being would want to live there.”

Even though the burglary happened before Trump’s attacks on Cummings and Baltimore, social media users pointed out that Trump’s incendiary language and today’s mocking tweet could be used to further encourage violence against Cummings.

Cummings, who grew up in Baltimore and has been an active part of the Civil Rights Movement since the 1960s, reaffirmed his commitment to his city in response to Trump’s Saturday tweets.

“Every morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors. It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents.”

According to CBS Local Baltimore, police are still investigating the incident and do not know whether any property was taken.
