Donald Trump probably wants to surprise America with something as a big as Barack Obama’s surprise “Osama Bin Laden is dead” announcement. Instead, he mostly surprises us with stories about the depth of his corruption. Maybe “surprise” is the wrong word, since it’s not surprising, but he is frequently exposed. This story is more about his stupidity than his corruption, for once. HuffPost reports that Trump’s plans to secretly meet with the Taliban and become a big terrorist organization-ending hero have been squashed.
Trump planned to meet Taliban leaders on Sunday, just a few days before the anniversary of 9/11, but canceled. He tweeted that this was in part because of a car bombing in Kabul that killed one American soldier and a dozen other civilians. He also revealed his whole plan, like the moronic supervillain he is:
Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday. They were coming to the United States tonight. Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to..— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 7, 2019
....only made it worse! If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway. How many more decades are they willing to fight?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 7, 2019
The Taliban kills people to “strengthen their bargaining position” all the time, but he still planned to have them over for tea.
Both Democrats and Republicans have been horrified by the fact that Trump not only planned this meeting, but that he’s tweeting about it so cavalierly, like we’re watching a reality TV show with him, but people are dying. Amy Klobucher went on CNN to draw comparisons between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. They both care more about spectacle than policy and goodness knows Trump would love to rule a dictatorship:
Amy Klobuchar on President Trump's handling of Afghan peace talks with the Taliban: “The whole thing doesn't quite make sense to me. And it's just another example of the President treating foreign policy like it's some kind of game show” #CNNSOTU pic.twitter.com/xAfHOil11L— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) September 8, 2019
“The way he conducts foreign policy just reminds me exactly of North Korea,” said Klobucher. “He loves the showmanship, he wants to have that moment, but then all the details aren’t done, and we end up in a worse place on the world stage than we were before.”
Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro said something similar, describing Trump’s foreign policy decisions as “very odd,” which is generously neutral:
Julián Castro on President Trump saying he called off Afghan peace talks with the Taliban: “It's another bizarre episode. It's more of his erratic behavior that people are tired of and that's one of the reasons I believe that he's going to lose in 2020” #CNNSOTU pic.twitter.com/ZC4e0oNOUT— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) September 8, 2019
Even Republicans are pretty disgusted with Trump for inviting supporters of al Qaeda, the people responsible for the September 11th attacks into the country:
.@RepKinzinger is 100% right. I'm generally supportive of peace talks but NOT this way. Brave first responders are dying everyday as a result of their efforts on that dark day; daughters are walking down the isle without their dads, sons are graduating college without their moms. https://t.co/2RX3USR98S— John Delaney (@JohnDelaney) September 8, 2019
Camp David is where America’s leaders met to plan our response after al Qaeda, supported by the Taliban, killed 3000 Americans on 9/11.— Liz Cheney (@Liz_Cheney) September 8, 2019
No member of the Taliban should set foot there. Ever.
The Taliban still harbors al Qaeda.
The President is right to end the talks.
How about we end the war without inviting the Taliban to dinner on the week of 9/11? https://t.co/5SC1mAmYlg— Justin Amash (@justinamash) September 8, 2019
Guess Trump couldn’t resist some sort of surprise reveal. Wonder if he’s confused that he’s not getting any applause?
