Woman On Hydroxychloroquine For 19 Years Still Caught COVID-19

President Trump is determined to tout hydroxychloroquine as a miracle cure for COVID-19, but one woman who took it — and came down with the virus anyway — isn’t having it.

Kim, a Wisconsin woman who has been taking hydroxychloroquine to treat lupus for two decades, told WISN that she was shocked when she wound up catching COVID-19 despite being on the drug Trump keeps pulling for.

“When they gave the diagnosis, I felt like it was a death sentence. I was like, ‘I’m going to die,’” she said. “I’m like, ‘How can I be sick? How? I’m on the hydroxychloroquine.’ They were like, ‘Well, nobody ever said that was the cure or that was going to keep you safe’ and it definitely did not.”

Kim shut herself inside her home when the pandemic hit the states, only going out to get groceries. But by mid-April, she began coughing and running a fever all the same. And from there it wasn’t long before she wound up in the hospital with difficulty breathing.

“You’re not safe taking that medication at all. [Hydroxychloroquine] is not going to prevent anything. You can still get coronavirus,” Kim said. “It kind of makes me mad that [Trump] thinks it’s going to do that and is telling the whole world it’s going to do that.”

Trump has been claiming hydroxychloroquine as a potential cure for awhile now.

“I happen to be taking it,” he said recently. “A lot of good things have come out. You’d be surprised at how many people are taking it, especially the front-line workers. Before you catch it. The front-line workers, many, many are taking it.”

The reality is that hydroxychloroquine is far from proven to be effective in treating COVID-19. Some studies have suggested it has no effect, while others have noted it actually can lead to an increase in deaths or heart troubles. Historically, the drug has been used to treat malaria and various autoimmune disorders.

Testing remains under way to see if it might be viable, but the FDA has come out and warned against people just taking it of their own volition.

“Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have not been shown to be safe and effective for treating or preventing COVID-19,” they said. “We will continue to investigate risks associated with the use of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for COVID-19 and communicate publicly when we have more information.”

With the President constantly spouting misinformation, people are frustrated that anyone is listening to him on this over scientists.

Kim ultimately was released from the hospital, but is still on oxygen at home. If that’s the best hydroxychloroquine can do…hard pass.
